35 drop out of teacher training

Thirty-five Christchurch Teachers’ College trainees have so far left their courses during 1983. Of a total of 380 primary trainees, 13 had dropped out of courses by the end of September, according to statistics given at yesterday’s college council meeting. One student had left from the special education division out of 53 trainees and 21 had left secondary courses, from 474 trainees. The. drop-out rate on the figures given is about 9.2 per cent. Education degree The Joint 1 Board of Studies on Education, made up of University of Canterbury and Teachers’ College representatives, has ap-

proved modifications to the proposed master of education degree. The degree requires a maximum of eight papers or its equivalent. Entry to the degree course will be through the bachelor of education degree which is taught at the college and university, or through some other New Zealand university degree or course in teacher training, or through experience as a teacher in a recognised educational institution.

The board hoped that the new degree course might be available next year. The first group of students to enter a bachelor of education programme at the college will complete their qualifications this year.
