Firearms raid ‘for holocaust protection’
A Kaiapoi man stole $lBB6 worth of firearms from a Rangiora sports store to protect himself and his property in the event of a nuclear holocaust, the District Court at Rangiora was told yesterday. Victor James Little, aged 22, a sickness beneficiary, was charged with breaking and entering Fox and O’Quist, Ltd, on October 15 with intent to commit a
crime therein. He pleaded guilty. Little was convicted and remanded to December 7 on $750 bail for a probation officer’s report and sentence.
Senior-Sergeant P. J. Gilbert said that at 11.45 p.m. on October 15 the defendant kicked down the front door of the store. He took four rifles, a cross bow and a packet of ammunition. He dropped the ammunition outside the shop, then dropped the firearms behind a building and asked some associates to collect them for hiim The defendant was located the following morning and all the property was recovered, said Senior-Ser-geant Gilbert. , Another Kaiapoi man charged with assisting Little was remanded without plea to December 7.
Peter Nehemia Haney, aged 24, unemployed, was charged that knowing that Victor James Little had committed burglary assisted Little by disposing of firearms stolen by him to enable him to avoid arrest.
