Drivers refuse to make deals
PA Wellington Drivers are refusing to make long-haul agreements until the Government gives them an exemption from the wage freeze. The Drivers’ Federation says it wants to negotiate better pay deals and conditions because of this month’s transport delicensing, which has allowed big companies to move immediately into long-distance work. The exemption is sought, so that a new national agreement can be negotiated. The federation has decided to withhold any
shift or variation of hours agreement in the meantime. “The present award" is totally inconsistent with the amount of line-haul transport now being undertaken,” said the drivers’ advocate, Mr R. J. Campbell. “Most employers who have got into the work expect to do so on some kind of shift arrangement,” he said. “The union is prepared to make such arrangements but we need an exemption from the wage freeze to do so, and will only do so on the basis of a full national agreement.”
