Short ball game
. Clive Norling, the Welsh referee, achieved some fame for the length of the second half which alllowed the All Blacks to snatch their last-minute victory over the Springboks at Eden Park in 1981.
At Leictester yesterday morning Derek Bevan the Welsh referee seemed to get his sums wrong as Midlands were defeating the ' All Blacks.
A stopwatch check, with due allowance for injury time, produced a first half of 36min 28s. The stopwatch showed the second half to last 35min 435.
Mr Bevan, during what Bryce Rope, the All Black coach, described as the best refeering his team had met on tour, raised a few All Blacks hackles in the first half. One of several brilliant breaks by Wayne Smith had
Steven Pokere passing to Bruce Smith with the line in reach. Even though the pass was deflected by a Midlands defender, Smith caught it and dived over the line. However, Mr Bevan ruled a forward pass and when an All Black criticised the decision he awarded a penalty kick to Midlands.
