Every Show runs record

By J. J. Boyle “He hasn’t got that kind of speed,” Commissionaire’s rider, Jim Cassidy, said after the hot favourite had to bow out to Every Show in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Churchill Stakes yesterday. “That kind of speed” for the 1600 m was 1:34.4, a track record. “Commissionaire has never run that fast in his life,” Cassidy said, after Every Show had turned the feature race into a brilliant one act affair. In this, his eleventh win from 21 starts for his Mosgiel owner-trainer, Mr Gordon Thomson, Every Show was rewriting a chapter of family history. His famous dam Show Gate won the Churchill Stakes twice. Now a four-year-old, Every Show was ridden yesterday by John Dowling, who has substituted at the C.J.C. meeting for an injured Sharon Reid. Every Show has not yet raced out of the South Island but he will get his chance in January, at the Wellington Cup meeting. Every Show ran fifth after a slow start in the

1000 m Edward Lumley Handicap on the first day of the meeting. “I think that run sharpened him a bit,” his ownertrainer remarked yesterday. Riders of Every Show’s well-beaten rivals yesterday would have agreed. Show Gate’s second son scorched over his last 1000 m in 58.6. Jim Cassidy had led the chase after Every Show with Commissionaire, but it was clear all of 400 metres out that he was on a vain chase. Commissionaire never gave up trying, but Every Show under a hands-and-heels ride, was home safe by two stylish lengths. Queen’s Pal, the top ranking South Island three-year-old filly last season, kept up her consistent strike rate by finishing third yesterday. She was in a gap of close to four lengths behind Commissionaire, just beating Super Dude, a stronger finisher. Gaelic Bid showed ability to get up for fifth after drifting to the back of the field on the inside at the start.
