Beaumaris top chance

By

TREVOR WILKES

Beaumaris looks a top chance in the first semifinal of the New Zealand Championships, the first leg of the double, at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s on-course totalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park this evening. Beaumaris, after beginning brilliantly from box six, cleared out in the middle stages, then held on strongly to beat Bourbon Lass and She’s a Friendly in a similar race hsre three

weeks ago, in 34:25 (for 560 m). Beaumaris looks ideally drawn (No. 3) to lead this field a merry dance again, and should prove difficult to catch. Hardest for him to beat could be Bourbon lass. Her run for second at her last start was full of merit. That followed a smart win at Ashburton, and she should run well here. The problem runner is Arkarita. She is without a doubt the class runner of the field, but her latest

efforts have hardly been encouraging. However, she was in winning form at the trials last .month, and might be at last regaining the form that saw her take the New Zealand Championship title last season. The second semi-final of the New Zealand Championships looks more interesting. Supreme Domino is chasing his seventh successive victory, and given a clear run, should be hard to beat. A great railer, Supreme Domino will be aided by the

inside draw, and it will be surprising if he is not in the thick of the finish. The big danger is Silent Orpheus, provided he can overcome his awkward box draw. He won brilliantly at QE II Park three weeks ago by a widening thirteen lengths in 33.96 (for 560 m). Silent Orpheus accounted for only three rivals on that occasion, but looked very sharp, and would only have to repeat that performance to be right in the finish.
