U.S.S. Texas prosecutions
PA Auckland Three men already facing charges of damaging the U.S.S. Texas in August pleaded not guilty in the District Court in Auckland to a charge of disobeying an order of the Auckland harbourmaster. Appearing before Judge Gilbert were Peter Don Wilson, aged 40, a beneficiary, of Hauparu Bay, Rotoiti; Dean Cameron Lowrie, aged 24, a groundsman, of Otonga Road, Rotorua; and David Macleod Pollock, aged 34, a teacher, of Kawerau.
They were jointly charged that together with lan Arthur James Newcombe, aged 20, an attendant, of
Rotorua, they failed to comply with the Harbourmaster’s direction to keep at least 100 m away from the U.S.S. Texas on August 2. Wilson, Lowrie, Newcombe, and a man who was granted interim suppression of name, also faced charges of jointly behaving in a disorderly manner on the harbour on August 2. Newcombe did not appear to plead because he was in hospital, and the other three pleaded not guilty to that charge. All the accused were remanded on bail to February 20 for a hearing, and for Newcombe to plead.
