Prospecting in Coromandel

PA Hamilton Prospecting for gold and silver may soon begin in the Coromandel State forest piark near Thames. A recommendation to the Government that Circular Quay Holdings, Ltd, be allowed to prospect on about 5000 hectares in the scenic Kauaeranga Valley was made by the Planning Tribunal in Thames yesterday. Circular Holdings indicated they would hand over the rights to Renison Goldfields Consolidated ’ (N.Z.), Ltd.

Initial prospecting would be by hand-held methods

but if indications were good helicopter pads may be set up, the company said. The Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy, has set strict conditions for the prospecting. There is to be no pollution of natural waterways and debris has to be cleared up. Also, permission to cut tracks will have to be sought from the Conservator of Forests. A bid by the Thames Coromandel District Council to postpone the hearing until the Thames Valley United Council had completed its planned survey of mining potential in the region, was turned down. -
