Hovercraft faults continue
Mechanical problems continue to plague the Pindair Skima 12 rescue hovercraft, which has been grounded for five months at Auckland Airport.
the airport’s civil aviation manager, Mr Tom Masters, said the drive belt appeared to be pulled out of alignment by force of the propeller.
The $286,000 craft wore out a new $3OO belt in 10 minutes during one test. It ripped through the next belt in only 15 minutes. The Civil Aviation Divi-
sion has spent more than $30,000 on modifications to make the craft more serviceable. Changes were made to the V 8 engine to increase horsepower, and to the propeller driveshaft, which was exposed to abrasive sand and grit.
Mr Masters said the engine adjustment was successful and had produced “the right number of revs.”
The boost in power is not believed to have caused the latest problems, which have occurred well below maximum output.
