Bumper year for French bubbly

NZPA Reims In spite of the ravages of hailstorms, the 1983 harvest of 4 billion litres of grapes in Champagne, France, has been termed the crop of the century. Officials predict that 300 million bottles of bubbly will be produced in 1983, surpassing 1982’s record 290 million bottles.

Exceptional summer weather and an unseasonably warm autumn over-

came damage by hailstorms that battered the young grapes of the . Champagne region early in the growing season. With back-to-back bumper crops, a bottle of 1983 champagne is likely to sell at last year’s prices, according to the Interprofessional Committee of Wines from Champagne. Poor harvests in 1978, 1980, and 1981 depleted France’s reserves of champagne and raised its price.
