Police dog law wanted
PA Auckland The Auckland S.P.C.A. wants police dogs to be given special legal protection, so that they are seen as "an extension of the handler’s arm” and more than just an animal The president of the society, Mrs Mary Walker, said three police, dogs had been hurt or killed over a short period. It cables on like this, we will be running out of good dogs.” ' Under present legislation, killing an animal is not a
criminal offence unless it is proved that pain and suffering were inflicted. If the animal died instantly, no charge can be laid, no matter who the animal belonged to. Mrs Walker said police dogs were continually thrust into dangerous situations and needed special protection. . If they were protected by law, people might think twice before lashing out at them, she said. The hesitation could allow police to move in more freely and lessen the chances of anyone being hurt. - The society has written to the R.N.ZJS.P.C.A. to promote the clause to the Government
