NZPA-Reuter Karachi The Olympic champions, India, beat New Zealand 2-1 to finish fourth in the sixnation Champions Trophy . men’s hockey tournament in Karachi. At half-time, the Indians led through a goal scored by the captain, Zafar Iqbal, in the thirty-first minute. A New Zealand forward, George Carnoutsos, hit the
equaliser in the thirtyseventh minute, but the Indians scored their winning goal when a fine shot by a full-back, Vineet Kumar, off a penalty corner landed in the New Zealand goal in the fifty-seventh minute. On the points table, India finished fourth with five points from five games, and New; Zealand took the bottomsf>lace with one point India won two matches, lost
two and drew one. Australia, Pakistan, and West Germany all have six points each from four outings. The defending champions, the Netherlands, have two points. and will play their last match against the world champions, Pakistan, while Australia meet West Germany. & New Zealand, who held the favourites, Australia,
to an unexpected draw earlier in the tournament, were far below their usual form. Carnoutsos was the only outstanding forward in the Kiwis’ attack, constantly menacing the Indian defence. New Zealand also failed to use their penalty corners to full advantage, converting none of the five they were awarded.
