Protection of animals
Sir,—lt is encouraging news to hear that this Government has proposed to amend the outdated Animal Protection Act. If these proposals are motivated by a genuine desire for justice, there is only one criterion of measurement, and that is that the same law that protects animals from abuse by citizens must also apply to all
places where animals are used for research. At present research workers are protected from prosecution by double standards of law. Democracy cannot operate under double standards for any of its citizens if it is to retain any credibility as a democracy. If meaningful reforms are formulated that give the least of our citizens single standards of justice, then the Government is to be commended; if it is merely carrying out the motions of reform it is merely compounding its errors.—Yours, etc., J. SHARP. November 3, 1983.
