Bat attack on police
A police sergeant’s righthand was painfully swollen and tendons were torn after he was hit by an escaped prisoner wielding a cricket bat, said Detective Sergeant D. M. Quested in the District Court yesterday. Duane Thomas Tito, aged 21, (Mr K. J. Grave), convicted of assaulting Sergeant Bruce Findlay, and escaping from Paparua prison, was remanded in custody to November 17 for a probation report and sentence.
The offences were admitted by Tito. Sergeant Quested said that Tito who had been sentenced to imprisonment for four years and a half for the armed robbery of the north New Brighton Post Office escaped from a work party on October 23. Three days later he was seen at Brighton by a police patrol which chased him to the Waimairi golf course. During the chase Tito had picked up a cricket bat which he lashed out with when cornered by police. On a charge of resisting the police sergeant with intent to obstruct him in the course of his duty, Tito was remanded to January 20 for a defended hearing.
