Canty wine praised

PA Wellington Canterbury made a breakthrough as a winemaking region at the national wine competition, judged this week at the Chateau Tongariro. St Helena pinot noir 82 won a gold medal, one of the few that had been awarded for this fine but temperamental red. The gewurztraminer class proved to be one of the most exciting yet presented in New Zealand. Visiting experts have regularly classed New Zealand gewurztraminer with those of Alsace. Their view was supported when seven gold medals were awarded for this wine — three for the present vintage and four for the more mature wines. The golds went to Collard dry 83, Cooks dry 83, Matawhero 82, Cooks 83, Penfolds 81, Robard and Butler 81, and Villa Maria reserve 82. Gold medals also went to three sweet whites — Cooks late pick muller-thurgau 83, Corbans late harvest nesting 80, and Nobilo’s mullerthurgau harvest 81.
