The day in Parliament

PA Wellington Parliament rose at 1.47 a.m. yesterday when the Leader of the House, Mr Thomson, moved that debate on the second reading of the Education Bill be adjourned. Members gave seven notices of motion when the House resumed at 2.30 p.m. The Minister of Justice, -Mr McLay, introduced the Judicature Amendment Bill, which was referred to the Statutes Revision Select Committee. The Forest Amendment Bill was also introduced and referred to the Lands and Agriculture Select Committee. Mr McLay brought it into the House on behalf of the Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy. The New Zealand Forestry Council Bill was introduced and referred to the Lands and Agriculture Select Committee. Ministers answered 16 questions and the chairman of the Local Bills Committee answered one.

The Arms Bill was reported back from the Statutes Revision Committee, with amendments. It was set down for its second reading at a later date. The Coal Mines Amendment Bill was reported back from the Commerce and Energy Select Committee, with amendments. It was also set down for a second reading at a later date.

The Hokianga County Council (Rating Validation) Bill received its second reading and will be debated in committee later.

Debate on the Commission of the Environment estimates resumed.

The House was debating Broadcasting estimates when it adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. ’ When the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. debate on the Broadcasting estimates continued, followed, by debate .on the Transport estimates. The Railways, Crown Law, Justice, and Post Office (electoral) estimates were passed without debate.

Members then began debating the Tourist and Publicity estimates. This was interrupted when the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
