Our Mana impresses when second to Camelot
By
G. K. YULE
While Camelot won the E. G. Mitchell Memorial at the trials held at Addington Raceway last evening, it was Our Mana which probably advanced his claims to be one of the leading fancies for the New Zealand Cup on
Tuesday. Hands Down could manage only seventh, but he went impressively and was not asked for an effort in the run home.
Camelot led for the last 2000 m of 2600 m run in 3min 22.95, with the last 800 m in 58.7 s and the final 400 m in 27.85.
Our Mana, after following Ansett, which , was in the open, began - to improve on the home turn. It was late before Colin de Filippi asked him for an effort and he quickly closed . on Camelot, failing by half a head to catch him. Our Mana looked as
though the run will sharpen him appreciably for his big test on Tuesday. Ansett raced right up to her good recent race form to hold on for third less than a length from Camelot, with half a length to Mighty Me, which had every chance and returned a sound trial for the Firestone Cavallino Stakes on Tuesday.
Kind Nature ran on slightly better than Jilaire’s Chance for fourth, with Hands Down not far away under a strong hold. He continued on at a solid pace for the next 150 m, with Peter Jones having trouble restraining him. He looks in tremendous order and will be a big threat in the Cup. Hands Down, which tangled for a few strides, took 2min 2s for his final 1600 m, the last 800 m in 58.2 s and the final 400 m in 28s.
Light Lord showed improvement on recent runs at
trials when he led practically throughout the Crowe’s Garage Pace. He set a rousing pace and held on well to win by a length in the smart time of 3min 20s for the 2600 m, the last 800 m in Imin 0.35, and the final 400 m in 29.15. He should pay his way at the Cup meeting. Roydon Magic ran on strongly for second, a length in front of another solid finisher in Timely Play, with Star Patron making ground to shade Toshack for fourth. Then came Wee Junior and Best Dream, both of which were pacing comfortably at the line.. Basil Dean showed his fitness for the No Response Handicap on Tuesday when he won the Alias Armbro Handicap. He improved on the home turn to be handy to the leaders turning for home. Once Kerry O’Reilly gave him more rein, he strode past his rivals and gathered Game Command in just short of the post, beating him by a length going away after returning 3min 27s for the 2600 m, the last 800 m in Imin I.Bs, and the final 400 m in 30.65.
Game Command was not pushed to hold second by more than a length from Tough Girl, with Stormy Mom doing well from 40m to get up for a close fourth, followed by Tussle, Idle Rules and Worthy Adios. Mister Mora broke at the start and again near the 1200 m. He looked very sore and was pulled up by George Shand. His chances of competing at the Cup meeting do not look bright. Ruthless, Nightania, Delark, Trinity Chase, Mystery Point and Glamour Chief
went attractively in supporting races. Results.—
