Carrier fire deaths
NZPA-Reuter Washington Six people had been killed and 35 injured in two fires yesterday in the United States aircraft-carrier Ranger during exercises in the Indian Ocean, the Navy said. . / The/fires has been in the machinery rooms of the conventionally powered carrier. ■
Navy officials said that the carrier was continuing its activities but because of damage to stone of its machinery was using only three of its four engines. The officials said that the ship could continue easily on three engines and was not heading for port The cause of the fires had not yet been determined but an investigation was in pro-
gress. The officials said that the dead would be flown off the carrier and the injured, suffering mainly smoke inhalation and cuts, were being treated in the ship’s hospital. The Ranger normally carries a crew of about 5000 men. One of the United States Navy’s 14 carriers is usually on duty in the Indian Ocean.
