Three-year cricket sponsorship
A three-year sponsorship totalling $40,000 for Canterbury cricket was announced last evening. The sponsor is Chancery Finance, Ltd, formerly Cooper Henderson Finance, Ltd, a Christchurch-based firm. Last season Cooper Henderson was the Canterbury team’s sponsor. “This is the biggest sponsorship Canterbury cricket has ever had,” said the president of the Canterbury Cricket Association, David Elder. “Every national sport now has to have sponsorship, and we can pay tribute to the public-mindedness of this company. The sponsorship will be of benefit to all cricketers.” The new sponsorship will embrace all Canterbury representative cricket and the Christchurch club competition. Mr David Heard, manager of Chancery Finance, Ltd, said his company was very pleased to be associated with Canterbury cricket, and had sought the increased involvement for the next three years because of the very professional attitude displayed by the Canterbury Cricket Association last season. “While the results achieved by the Canterbury Shell Shield side were not as good as we would have hoped for, we recognise that the team is going through a rebuilding period, and it is during such a period that our sponsorship will be of the greatest benefit to Can-
terbury cricket,” he said. “When a team is winning it is very easy to obtain sponsorship, but we are confident that within the next three years Canterbury will again be rated the top provincial side.” Chancery Finance also announced sponsorship of the Bob Carter coaching clinics, where private tuition is also available from the former Northamptonshire and Canterbury representative. The clinics are open to all age groups. “We see this as a very important aspect of our involvement with the sport, especially this season when there has been such a dramatic increase in the numbers participating at all levels.” A director of the company, Mr David Cooper, said that Canterbury had had a great rugby season, and it was his and his company’s hope that under Cran Bull Canterbury would again reach the top. The new sponsorship will provide about $13,000 for the Shell side and the Chanry Finance first grade championship. Prize money for the competition will total $2500 and the fund will also pay for the publication of the competition draw. Other payments from it will be to Canterbury’s professional player, Richard Hadlee, to the coach Jack Harliwich, and for such items as track suits and gear cases for the players.
