One Thousand Guineas attracts capacity field

By

W. R. CARSTON

Twenty-one three-year-old fillies, 11 of them from North Island stables, were left in the field for the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas when acceptances for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton closed yester-

day. Included among the acceptors for the >55,000 classic are the winners of three important fillies’ events in the north this spring. They are Burletta, which took the honours in the Gold Trail Stakes on her home course at Hastings in September, Graphic Dance, the Lowland Stakes winner at Masterton earlv last month, and Eastern Bay, which came up with her second victory for the season in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham last Saturday week. Burletta and Eastern Bay are both handily drawn, at Nos. 5 and 4 respectively, in Saturday’s 1600 m event Graphic Dance did not fare so well — she drew marble No. 20 — nor did Hint which is generally expected to be the south’s brightest hope. This Riccarton-trained filly, impressive winner of her last two starts, drew No. 17 at the gate. But with the field exceeding the safety limit — the maiden, Funny Lass, and the dual acceptors, Buffy Beaufort and Kurdasea, are on the list of reserves — both are likely to come in a place or two yet. The One Thousand Guineas will be the second leg of the T.A.B. treble. The other legs are the Mr Sergioa “1400” and the Lion Brown “1600.” North Island stables are also strongly represented in both legs of the T.A.B. double which will be on the $31,000 Benson and Hedges Gold Cup and the $lO,OOO Edward Lumley Handicap. The strong line-up for the first leg which attracted 22 acceptors, includes last year’s winner, Sirtain, which shaped as if he is fast approaching his best again with an impressive victory over 1600 metres at the Hawera trials on Sundav. There should be no loitering through the 1000 m of the Edward Lumley. Handicap with such speedsters as Every Show and Clansman, from the south, and the fast northern sprinters, Ebony Belle, Buonarroti and Mr Illusion, figuring among the 16 acceptors.

Trifecta betting will be an innovation at Riccarton on Saturday. Because there will be trifectas and qulnellas on all races there will be only one on-course treble. This will be on races 5, 6 and 7. There will also

be an on-course “straight” double on races 9 and 10. Acceptances for New Zealand One Thousand Guineas Day are:—
