Rain mars cricket trials

The trial matches to help the Canterbury cricket selectors assess the form of the province's leading players were turned into a lottery by the persistent drizzle at Hagley Oval yesterday. Two of the three games started late, and all were brought to a halt soon after 5 p.m. as waves of rain swept across the grounds. There were some useful performances, however.

David Stead and Roger Fuller shared an enterprising fifth-wicket stand of 112 in 74 minutes on Hagley 3. Stead’s 56 came off 59 balls while Fuller’s unbeaten 60 was scored in 89 minutes, and off 72 balls. Richard Leggat, last season’s Canterbury captain but not among the six appointed for yesterday’s games, scored a brisk 63 for Richard Hadlee’s XI on Hagley 1. In the same match, Craig Thiele achieved the day’s best bowling analysis, four for 24.

John Gully and Mark Priest shared an opening stand of 73 in even time for Warren Eddington’s XI against Bob Carter's team on Christ’s College grounds. Gully’s 52 included five boundaries and a six. Carter was unbeaten on 45 out of 61 — six fours and one six — off 16.2 overs when the rain set in. Scores:—

Richard Hadlee’s XI 189/6 off 50 overs (R. I. Leggat 63 not out, D. R. Mably 40, G. McManus 30, M. T. Johnson 26; C. Thiele 4/24) met Cran Bull’s XI 58/3 off 27.2 overs (G. S. Gambles 27).

David Stead’s XI 204/5 off 55 overs (R. A. Fuller 60 not out, D. W. Stead 56, M. R. O’Donnell 33) met Phil d'Auvergne’s XI 59/1 off 23 overs (G. Sercombe 22 not out, K. C. Congdon 22). Warren Eddington’s XI 170/ 9 off 50 overs (J. Gully 52, E. Spence 32, M. W. Priest 25; B. J. Lindsay 3/37, R. M. Carter 2/25) met Bob Carter’s XI 61/ 0 off 16.2 overs (Carter 45 not out).
