Obituary Mr M. Poulton
PA Wellington Mr Maurice Alec Poulton, a painter and awardwinning commercial artist, died in Wellington last week. He was 74.
A traditional landscape artist, Mr Poulton painted many works for public buildings and his pictures went to Australia, the United States, and Britain. He was supervising artist in the publicity and advertising branch of the Railways Department, which he joined in 1925 as a cadet artist. He was appointed designing artist in 1938 and supervising artist in 1956. He retired in 1965. Mr Poulton gained a merit award with his painting, “Afternoon Shadows, Akatarawa,” in the Kelliher Landscape competition in 1958 and was successful again in 1963 with a Waitomo country scene. Mr Poulton represented Wellington and Auckland in senior rugby. He was a life member of the Onslow Athletic and Football Club in Wellington. He also served three terms as president of the Wellington Civil Service Club.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
