Halswell causes upset

The boys of the Halswell Tennis Club’s 17 years team will not easily forget the start of “The Press” junior interclub competitions this season. The unheralded Halswellites marked the occasion by upending the top-ranked side, Cashmere, in division one of the premier junior grade on Saturday. Dion Kerr and Michael Clapshaw set Halswell off on a confident note by winning a testing top doubles, 7-5, in the third set, and then their team-

mates, Aaron Whittaker and David Hatipov, turned up trumps in the singles.

That left the rubbers score at three-all but Kerr eased Halswell ahead through claiming a set from Cashmere’s No. 1, Chris Mason, in the singles. Kerr, in fact, came close to upsetting Mason, for he lost the second set in a tie-breaker after winning the first. Elmwood, Avonhead and Burwood were the others to win in the boys’ top division, and in the girls’ grade, Shirley,

Elmwood and Edgeware all had decisive wins. St Martins beat Fendalton on a countback of sets, after dropping both doubles.

Results of the 17 years grade were:— Boys: Elmwood 4, Edgeware 2; Halswell 8 sets, Cashmere 7; Avonhead 4, St Ninians 2; Burwood 4, Fendalton 2.

Girls: Edgeware 6, Te Kura 0; Shirley 5, North Linwood 1; Elmwood 5, Bishopdale 1; St Martins 8 sets, Fendalton 7.
