Air conditioning system

American and Japanese tourists demand full air conditioning when travelling by coach and Newmans were the first to provide these in New Zealand. With more than 100 air conditioned coaches it is still the only tourist company in New Zealand with almost its entire tour fleet fully air conditioned. Some other coaches on New Zealand roads have air vents, but this is not full air conditioning. On the new modern Newmans fleet, every one of the 45 passengers has an individual air conditioning control which can be adjusted to match his own personal comfort. The air conditioning is installed by New Zealand’s

most experienced refrigeration company, General Foods Commercial Equipment Division, Ltd. General Foods Commercial Equipment Division made enquiries around the world to find the most efficient air conditioning system for coaches operating on New Zealand roads and under local conditions. It selected the American-de-signed Thermo King system. Thermo King units are mounted on the roof or at the rear of Newmans coaches. These units, made of fibre-glass and reinforced plastic, contain a condenserevaporator, aluminium fans and two blowers. The air entering each coach is also automatically filtered by the Thermo King

unit. The fact that they can tour New Zealand in air conditioned comfort has often been a major selling point in attracting American tourists to New Zealand. But it is not only Americans who tour Central Otago in the heat of summer, who appreciate the advantages of air conditioning. New Zealanders and visitors from other countries taking a tour holiday in New Zealand comment favourably on the air conditioned ride. In winter, Newmans coaches are kept comfortably warm at even temperature with a thermostatically controlled Webasto diesel heating system.
