Space arms race warning

NZPA-Reuter Moscow The Soviet Union will respond with new weapons of its own if the United States develops orbiting anti-missile defence systems, the official news agency Tass reported yesterday. Commenting on reports that President Ronald Reagan is considering a multi-billion-dollar project for building satellite-based laser guns, Tass said such a step would mean starting a new arms race in space.

“The Pentagon strategists

should not hope that the U.S.S.R. will allow them to turn outer space into a proving range for the preparation of war against the socialist countries.” said Tass.

American officials said that Mr Reagan was considering proposals for a socalled “star wars” anti-mis-sile defence system, which he first suggested in a speech last March. Tass renewed President Yuri Andropov’s call for a United States-Soviet agreement banning all weapons from space.
