No Govt stop to logging
PA Wellington The Government will not intervene in the proposed logging of the Waitutu Forest in Southland. Conservationists want to stop the Feltex company logging the Maori-owned forest. The Minister of Forests, Mr Elworthy, said he had met Feltex representatives yesterday morning.
He said Feltex had an agreement with the land owners, the Waitutu Incorporation, and as far as he was concerned there was no place for the Government to get involved. “I reiterated the Government view that this agreement is a private matter between the two parties who have negotiated on the basis of willing buyer and seller,” he said.
