Self-defence courses optional for schools
PA Wellington The Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, said yesterday he had not considered establishing compulsory self-defence courses in schools. But, he told Parliament, it seemed there was a need for such courses in some parts of New Zealand.
The Social Credit party’s leader, Mr Beetham, had asked Mr Wellington if he had thought of making selfdefence courses for girls compulsory in intermediate and secondary schools.
Teen-age girls were particularly vulnerable to sexual assaults, said Mr Beetham. The recently formed physical education syllabus revision committee would consider the need for selfdefence courses as part of the general phys-ed programme.
