Bail opposed in assault case

Bail was opposed by the police in the District Court at Christchurch yesterday when a man appeared on a charge of assaulting the former City 'Missioner, the Rev. Peter Coughlan, on October 11. Tani Suliui, aged 22, unemployed (Mr E. J. Tait), was remanded on bail of $l5OO to October 27, before Judge Frampton. Applying for bail Mr Tait

said Suliui was a first offender and that a surety was available.

Sergeant Thompson opposed bail because of the nature of the offence and because the defendant was a resident of Wellington. The charge relates to an incident in which Mr Coughlan was assaulted at night while walking his dog in Hereford Street.
