Barry survives full distance
Kevin Barry, the New Zealand light-heavyweight amateur boxing champion, performed with distinction in defeat at the World Cup tournament in Rome yesterday. Although beaten on points by the Russian world title-holder, Kacianowskij, Barry tarnished his opponent’s reputation as a knockout specialist.
Officials and competitors were surprised that Barry survived the full distance and forced Kacianowskij to settle for a points victory.
Barry said in a telephone call to his family in Christchurch yesterday that he was extremely satisfied with his performance. Barry felt he was leading after the first round, before the Russian built up a points lead. He emulated the feat of
his Oceania team-mate and New Zealand heavyweight champion, Mike Kenny, who also restricted a Russian world champion to a points result.
The New Zealanders were conceding massive advantages in experience to their Russian rivals, who have regular competition at European and international levels.
They also emerged considerably more unscathed than the two Canadians who were so impressive in winning gold medals in Brisbane at the Commonwealth Games. The heavyweight, Willie de Witt, was the victim of a headbutt from a Korean boxer, and in the middleweight division Shaun O’Shaughnessy had his jaw broken by a Russian fist.
