Golfing hopes high

The Canterbury Junior Golf Society will be represented by a team of 10 at the annual provincial societies tournament for the Booth Shield at Labour week-end.

This year’s event, which consists of three rounds of stroke play based on handicap with the best six scores (one of which has to be a girl’s card) to count in each round, will be played at the Poverty Bay club in Gisborne. Eleven teams from throughout the country are expected to compete and Canterbury has high hopes of success. After being in recess for five years, the Canterbury society was resurrected this year and it raised its own finances to send the team to Gisborne. Three of the team, Ross Jones, Brent Street and Andrew Bishop, have had considerable experience in the Woodward Cup interclub competition. The team is: Jones (captain), Street, Bishop, Andrew Carver, Chris Pemberton, Hugh McLeod, Pam Cox, Carey Fletcher, Sharon Bilton and Tania Barnett.
