How the votes were cast on two abortion bills
PA Wellington Ms Marilyn Waring’s bill, the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Repeal Bill, was defeated in Parliament yesterday at its introduction stage by 57 votes to 20. Mr D. L. Moyle (Hunua) was at a conference in Nelson. The Labour leader, Mr Lange, and Sir Basil Arthur (Timaru) were in Timaru. Dr M. E. R. Bassett (Te Atatu) and Mrs Margaret Shields (Kapiti) are overseas, and Mr R. W. Prebble (Auckland Central) is in the Kermadec Islands. Mr T. J. Young (Lab, Eastern Hutt) was absent because selection for his electorate was to be held this evening. Mrs Whetu TirikateneSullivan (Lab, Southern Maori) was attending her brother-in-law’s tangi. Five Government members were absent for the votes. The Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Cooper, Mr D. C. McKinnon (Albany), and Mr H. N. Austin (Awarua) are overseas. The Minister of Customs, Mr Allen, was absent because of ill health. The Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, was on official business in Auckland. The Speaker, Sir Richard Harrison, was not required to vote on either measure.
