Boycott disappointed
NZPA-Reuter Leeds Geoff Boycott, the former England opener sacked by Yorkshire earlier this month after 21 seasons with the county club, refused to be drawn into a battle of words with his former employers last night. Earlier yesterday, Boycott, who has scored the most test runs in cricket history, learned that a compromise deal worked out by his supporters had been rejected by Yorkshire’s general committee.
The deal had been based gon the suggestion that the former Yorkshire captain would play for the county next season—his testimonial
year—and then retire. Speaking on British television last night, Boycott, who turns 43 tomorrow, said: “I am naturally very disappointed, but I would like to thank all those people who wrote to the club and the media supporting me.” Boycott’s supporters plan to meet again on Sunday to collect signatures to force a special meeting of the club. There has been discord within the club for more
than five years, fuelled by dressing-room rows between Boycott and the team’s manager, Ray Illingworth.
