Ruling on adverts in Maori
PA Wellington Advertisements written in Maori are not discriminatory even though those directed against people on account of race are. This is the ruling of the Race Relation Office, in response to a query by a
newspaper company, concerned that a Maori language advertisement in its “situation vacant” columns was in breach of the Human Rights Act because it was restricted to people who could read Maori.
The Newspaper Publishers’ Association said that the Race Relations Office had advised that the advertisement was acceptable.
"Discrimination can be unlawful if it is directed against persons on account of their colour, race, religion, etc., but not because of their linguistic attributes,” according to the statement “The advertisement is open to pakehas and people of other races who understand Maori and is therefore
not in breach of the act”
