Anode carbon idea shelved—Minister

PA Wellington Plans for the local manufacture of anode carbon, used in aluminium smelting, would not go ahead in the short-term, said the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, yesterday. A Government-established task force had decided it was not economically viable to produce the carbon in New Zealand, he said. Mr Birch said the result of the task force’s investiga-

tion was disappointing, as domestic production of anode carbon for the Tiwai Point smelter would have saved New Zealand about $3O million a year in overseas exchange. However, Mr Birch said a possible increase in anode carbon prices could make local manufacture viable after next year, and the task force had recommended research to continue in the meantime.
