Tight security

PA Napier i Security was tight at the Napier District Court yesterday when Malcolm Boyce Merry, aged 51, of Flaxmere, Hastings, appeared on a charge of murdering a Tongoio farmer, Mr John Doohan, on Saturday. Merry, a tool setter, was remanded in custody without plea until next Wednes-

day, his birthday. A date for a depositions hearing will be set when Merry next appears. Counsel, the duty solicitor, Mr Peter Graham, made an application for interim suppression of name, but this was refused by Judge Sheehan. Extra police and prison officers were on duty at the courthouse as a safety precaution.
