Constable saves woman from burning house

PA New Plymouth Firemen and neighbours yesterday praised the courage of a Hawera police constable who plunged into a burning house to rescue a woman, aged 80, from almost certain death. Constable David Newland collapsed from smoke inhalation after dragging Mrs Mary Gulliver from her house about 1.30 a.m. yesterday.

He required mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Mrs Gulliver was taken to Hawera Hospital. Constable Newland said

he found Mrs Gulliver on the floor after several minutes searching in her smoke-filled bedroom.

“I grabbed her by the shoulder, hauled her across the bed, and pushed her out the window,” he said. “We got tangled in the curtain.”

The rescue was the second of its kind in south Taranaki this week. On Monday, Miss Robyn Smith was pulled unconscious from her Manaia house by firemen.

Mrs Gulliver and Miss Smith were both reported to be in a satisfactory condition yesterday.
