More Chatham reserve land

Parliamentary reporter A Chatham Island farmer, Mr Manuel Tuanni, has given more than IOOOha of forest and wetland to the Crown as a Nature Reserve. The land will be used to preserve rare Chatham Island wildlife and plants, and is a big addition to the Lands and Survey Department’s group of reserves on the Chathams. The 1028 ha block covers the south-western part of Chatham Island. Most of it is covered in dense scrub forest, merging with swamp

and bogland along its eastern edge. The forest is in good order, having been little modified by fire, browsing animals, or human activity.

It contains rare and endangered plant species, including Chatham Island spear grass.

It is also the presumed home of the Taiko (Magenta petrel) which was believed extinct for more than a century. The bird was rediscovered in 1977, but its nests have never been'found.
