Talks fail

PA Wellington Four hours of talks last night between the Federation of Labour and the Government have failed to solve the Marsden Point oil refinery dispute. Further talks are set for today or tomorrow. The F.O.L. president, Mr W. J. Knox, said after the meeting with the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, that he was not optimistic for a quick settlement.

But Mr Bolger said that with common sense on both sides, “and I think that is available,” the dispute could be resolved quickly. Mr Bolger said that it was not the dispute that was holding up the restart of the refinery. The refinery had yet to get a final safety clearance in order to start work.

Mr Bolger said the main sticking point in the talks was wage relativity within the refinery work-force.
