Enterprise in dashing win

Special correspondent Dunedin

Enterprise graduated to open class with a dashing win in the Big Softie Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday evening. “He was bolting all the way,” said Peter Shand, the regular driver of Enterprise. Enterprise began quickly from 20m and trailed three places back on the outer. He moved up three wide at the 400 m, took the measure of the pacemaker, Mister Wood Chips at the 200 m, and came on to score by two and a half lengths in the moderate time of 3min 33.3 s for the 2700 m, a mile rate of 2min 7.15.

“He has just kept on improving with each race this season,” said Pat Heffernan, who trains Enterprise at Moonlight, 100 km north-west of Dunedin and some 3000 ft above sea level. Enterprise has now had 11 wins and 18 minor placings in 55 starts for $68,620 in stakes. He is a good stayer and he will only need to hold form to rate a major threat in the New Zealand Cup next month.

Enterprise has New Zealand Cup influences in his

pedigree. His sire, Lordship

won the race in 1962 and 1966 and sired the 1979 winner, Lord Module, while his dam Universo, is by Yankee Express from With Honours, by Stormyway and Loyal Nurse, which won the 1949 New Zealand Cup from 36 yards behind. Enterprise has the Hannon Memorial Free-for-all at Oamaru on his programme in a fortnight, while his trainer is undecided about starting him from 30m behind on the second night at Forbury next Saturday. Agrinion, the runner-up to Enterprise on Saturday, might have finished closer to Enterprise had she worked clear earlier. Robin Butt took her to the front

after 600 m rather than trail Doctor Bailey. Mister Wood Chips went to the front at the 1900 m and he held his ground until the 200 m with Enterprise improving on the outer which kept Agrinion boxed. Mister Wood Chips ran his best race for some time, when he fought on for third, three parts of a length back. Borana, which was late working clear from four back on the inner, ran on for fourth, ahead of

, Stampede, which was runining on.', ' <
