‘Save midwives’ group formed

PA Auckland Parents and midwives in Auckland have formed a group in response to the recently introduced Nurses Amendment Bill, which, they say, will seriously erode the profession of midwifery. Ms Judy Larkin, a member of the new group — the Save the Midwives Association — said that the association intended to make every endeavour to ensure the public was fully aware of the implications and potential effects of the bill.

“The bill purportedly protects women and children from some pretty peculiar births, according to the Minister of Health, Mr Mal-

colm, who is concerned over the recent water births,” she said.

She said that, in order to clamp down on such births, the bill introduced Draconian provisions which would end the practice of midwifery in New Zealand.

Ms Larkin said that the bill would, among other things, deny specialist midwives the opportunity to practise in New Zealand, make it even more difficult for Maori and Pacific Island women to (become midwives, give the Health Department wide powers to suspend midwives from practke, and deny parents their J 'choice of birth attendant.
