Coach disappointed by play
DAVID LEGGAT
New Zealand’s soccer coach, Allan Jones, was disappointed with what his team produced for most of its Olympic Games qualifying match against ChineseTaipei at Mount Smart stadium on Saturday. He felt his players tried too hard and “froze” in the second half of its 2-0 win.
“They were afraid to take chances,” said Mr Jones. He did not use this as an excuse, and admitted being
concerned at the lack of strikes on goal in the second half.
There was no special reason the team went off the boil in the second half, “But if you hit a flat spot you can’t do much about it,” he added.
New Zealand will leave tomorrow evening for the away games in Tokyo and Taipei, although from a practical point, they are meaningless to New Zealand. They will, however.
offer further hard .match play which New Zealand needs. That squad will be named today. Either Japan or Chinese-Taipei will also go through to the second round with New Zealand. The format for that section has not been decided, but New Zealand will press for a home and away series. Ten teams will compete in the second round, with the top two from four other groups advancing. Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar
and Syria are in group one; Bahrain, Iraq, Lebanon, and United Arab Emirates form the second group; India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Singapore make up the third section; while China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand will battle for the two spots in group four.
