Poverty Bay overwhelms
PA Gisborne Poverty Bay finished its season on a winning note by overwhelming East Coast, 74-0, in a non-championship rugby union match at Tolaga Bay on Saturday.
In the traditional fixture between the two neighbouring unions, Poverty Bay was too good in all respects and its dominant forwards won endless possession for fast,
enterprising backs. Tries came in a steady stream. It was only East Coast’s strong mid-field defence which kept the score from being higher. There were 14 tries in all, nine of them converted.
Coast looked like scoring only twice in the entire game. Outstanding players for Poverty Bay were Barry Hyland in the forwards and
the first five-eighths, Murray Parkes, in the backs. For East Coast, Sam Fox shone in the forwards and the half-back, Boydie Donald, was notable in the backs. Scorers:
Poverty Bay: I. Newlands, K. Ferris (4), M. Parkes, B. Hyland (2), I. Ngatai, M. Newman, R. Huriwai, M. Preston, R. Owen (2). Owen 9 conversions.
