‘Entertainer of the Year’
PA Auckland The country singer, Patsy Riggir, named last evening as “Entertainer of the Year,” was too busy singing at a Christchurch cabaret to celebrate her award.
In fact, she said she did not hear of the award for almost an hour after the announcement at Trillos.
Miss Riggir, who will be 38 on Thursday, said it was “the best birthday present one could ever wish for.”
“It is something I never dreamed I would achieve. I do not know whether to laugh or cry or what,” she said. “I am thrilled to bits."
Miss Riggir, who lives at Putaruru, labelled the award as a breakthrough for country music. Other awards announced last evening by the Entertainment Operators’ Association were:
Group of the Year, the Pink Flamingoes; Rising Star Award for the most promising young entertainer, David Curtis; and merit awards to the radio announcer, Merv Smith, the tour promoter, Trevor King, and John Gordon of the radio programme, “An Appointment with John Gordon.”
