Sister-city talks

From BRUCE ROSCOE in Tokyo

A senior Japanese politician is visiting Christchurch today to discuss with the Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, the sister-city relationship with Kurashiki in the south-west-ern prefecture of Okayama.

Mr Takenori Kato, who was Home Affairs Minister in the Cabinet of Mr Takeo Fukuda, is now a member of the upper house of Japan’s Diet (Parliament) for Okayama. He is credited with being a prime mover behind establishing the sister-city bond during his double term

as Governor of Okayama from 1964 to 1972.

“Kurashiki is very proud of Christchurch as a sister,” Mr Kato said, before his departure. “We are very happy to * have this relationship. It is very useful for encouraging sports and educational exchanges, and many Kurashiki citizens want to visit Christchurch,”'he said. Mr Kato will present a message from the Mayor of Kurashiki, Mr Yoshio Takizawa, to Sir Hamish and in two days of talks will discuss the future of the partnership.
