No Govt funds for Mt Hutt
Parliamentary reporter No Tourist and Publicity Department funds will be used to support the continuation of F.I.S. ski-racing at Mount Hutt, according to the Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot. He made this clear in Parliament in responding to questions by Mr G. T. Knapp (Socred., East Coast Bays). Mr Knapp asked Mr Talbot if it was correct that this year’s F.I.S. series would be the last unless financial support came from his department.
Mr Talbot said that the decision on the future of the series was now up to the
Mount Hutt Company.. “It is not the responsibility of the Tourist and Publicity Department to support competitive sports fixtures in New Zealand,” he said. He had seen a statement by the chairman of the Mount Hutt company, Mr Peter Yeoman, which said that the series would not continue without the department’s assistance.
“I would say to Mr Yeoman, or anyone else who wants to stage these events in New Zealand, that they should get out into the private sector and get the financial backing,” said Mr Talbot.
