State borrowing

Sir,—G. E. Clayton’s letter, published under the heading “Hobson’s Choice,” draws attention to the fact that we do not know whether a Labour government would borrow less than a National government. Labour’s leader and deputy leader have attacked the catastrophic level of Government borrowing, but have carefully refrained from mentioning the orthodox alternatives to such borrowing: higher taxes or substantial cuts in Government spending. In my last letter I urged the need for the mass media to help persuade the average voter that the longer the country drifts on its present course the more impossible the debt situation will become. In typical irresponsible fashion, the mass media have responded by avoiding this unpleasant issue and devoting excessive attention to personal squabbles within the Labour Party. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. September 29, 1983.
