Official report, prices

Crossbred fleece wool prices improved during the combined Christchurch and Tirgaru wool sale yesterday, according to the two official reports.

The sale was also the second day of this week’s two-day Christchurch sale.

According to the official Christchurch report, issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the Council of Wool Exporters, wool offered was similar to that on the first day, Wednesday. The Christchurch offering was 11,970 bales of growers’ wool and 984 bales from the Wool Board stocks.

Competition was quite strong and well spread. Principal buyers were Eastern Europe and Japan, supported by Western Europe ana New Zealand mills.

Compared with the Christchurch sale on September 28 the market for Merino and extra fine Halfbred was in sellers’ favour; for fine to strong Halfbred very firm and for extra strong unchanged. Skirtings were irregular but generally unchanged, and oddments 2.5 per cent dearer. Crossbred fleece types were firm and shorn hogget and second-shear also were firm. Skirtings were par to 2.5 per cent cheaper, and oddments 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper. According to the official report for the Timaru section, issued by the South Canterbury Woolbrokers’ Association, the offering consisted of 8593 bales of main line wool and wool classed under the growers’ own brands. A portion of the bin wool has been held over for the sale on October 28.

The offering was drawn from North Otago, the Mackenzie Country and Mid and South Canterbury and consisted of Merino (3 per cent) Corriedale and Halfbred (29 per cent) crossbred (23 per cent) shorn and woolly hoggets (19.7 per cent) oddments (19.5 per cent) and miscellaneous the balance.

The Merino wool from the Hakataramea Valley, Alexandra, Tarras and the Mackenzie Country had good length but x were very moity. The Halfbred and Corriedale wools from Mid-Canterbury and North Otago were of good length, good colour and some very high yielding. The crossbreds from the coastal areas were good length, good colour and also high yielding. Over all there was a high percentage of good washing fleece wools. Some lots of woolly hogget were of good length and well grown, but the shorn hoggets in some cases contained a variation in length, although there were some high yielding types. Oddments over all were generally well prepared. Quotations for the Timaru section were mainly the same as for the Christchurch section, the exceptions being crossbred fleece in sellers’ favour, skirtings in buyers’ favour, and crutchings unchanged. The Wool Board was not

required to support -the market and made a' near-total clearance of its own offering. Prompt date is October 18. The following is the official range of prices issued by the Christchurch and the South Canterbury Woolbrokers’ Associations.
