Sextuplet dies

NZPA Hamburg The smallest of the sextuplets born at Hamburg last week-end has died. A spokesman for the Eppendorf University Clinic said yesterday that the infant, a boy who weighed only 1.61 b (726 g at birth, had died on Wednesday. The other babies, four girls and a boy, were in incubators and in good condition. They weighed between 2.41 b and 3.11 b (1.08 and I.4kg) at birth. The mother, a nurse, aged 28, who had used fertility drugs, also remained in hospital in a good condition, the spokesman said. The sextuplets were delivered by caesarean section. The hospital has been reluctant to say much more, saying that it wants peace and quiet for the mother and babies. The names of the parents have not been given.
