Stowaways in jet
PA Wellington Night security at Wellington Airport will be tightened after yesterday morning’s shock discovery of two runaway teen-agers in a Qantas Boeing 7475 P. They had climbed aboard the jumbo jet after crossing the tarmac during the night, and were found hiding in the economy-class toilets. Airline crew discovered the two youths while mak-
ing pre-flight checks only an hour before the plane was due to take off for Melbourne. The police said that the boys, aged 15 and 16, would face charges in the Children and Young Persons Court. They will appear on Monday. ‘A spokesman for the airport police, Sergeant W. A. Laney, said the two youths were from a North Island
rural town. They had apparently hitch-hiked to Wellington on Thursday and had gone to the airport at Rongotai where they crossed the tarmac at night and climbed aboard the plane. The police were unsure of exactly how they had found their way into the jumbo jet, which had been secured with its doors closed and ramps locked.
