Hamblett steadies to win Templeton golf

Peter Hamblett yesterday won the Templeton pro-am golf tournament by one stroke from his fellow Christchurch professional, Wayrie Mclntosh. It was a highly satisfactory three-under-par round of 70 for Hamblett, who was in a position to win the Avondale pro-am on Thursday after a string of birdies. But he had a dreadful time on the last three holes of that tournament, dropping four shots and finishing three behind the winner, Frank Nobilo.

Such inconsistency was thrust aside in the final holes yesterday, and although he dropped a shot at the eighteenth, his three-under-par round was sufficient to hold off Mclntosh. The omens were bad for Hamblett when he dropped a shot at the par-three second hole, but the power

of positive thinking apparently worked for him, because he birdied the next three holes — a par five and two par fours. He added another birdie at the ninth. His second nine was more circumspect. He had a birdie at the sixteenth and lost a stroke at the last. The course was in excellent condition for the tournament and the professionals praised the fast greens.

Mclntosh dropped only one shot in his round — at the ninth — and balanced that with three birdies.

Nobilo (Auckland) had a very mixed round yesterday and finished two shots behind Hamblett, with a 72.

He had five birdies in his round, but they were nullified by four bogeys. Results: 70 — P. Hamblett (Christchurch). 71 — W. Mclntosh (Weedons). 72 — F. Nobilo (Auckland). 73 — M. Moynihan (Auckland). 75 — D. Good (Tasmania), T. Leech (Auckland), J. Griffin (Invercargill). 76 — S. Charles (Christchurch), M. Guy (Shirley), S. Paterson (Christchurch). 77 — T. Adcock (Dunedin), C. Caldwell (Christchurch), B. Griffiths (Auckland), M. Lavery, G. Parkinson (Auckland), K. Southerden (Napier), M. Skilton (Christchurch).
